How does Smart Entry with Walk Away Auto Lock work?
Today we wanted to take a look at another technology found in Honda vehicles, but we thought we’d look at one that’s often overlooked. You’re constantly hearing and reading things about Honda Sensing, so we thought we’d switch it up and focus on the Smart Entry system that features Walk Away Auto Lock technology. What is Smart Entry?
At its most basic, the Smart Entry system is the technology built into your key fob and vehicle that allows you to lock and unlock it without removing the remote from your pocket or bag. In order to use the technology, you must have the device somewhere on your person and be within a radius of roughly 32 inches from an exterior door or tailgate handle. The doors will automatically unlock by meeting these criteria and grabbing either of the front door handles or the tailgate handle, but if you don’t open a door within 30 seconds, they will re-lock. To lock the doors, you can press the door lock button found on either of the front doors or the tailgate while meeting the same criteria.
What is Walk Away Auto Lock?
If your vehicle has the Smart Entry system that features the Walk Away Auto Lock technology, you won’t have to worry about pressing the lock button. The Walk Away Auto Lock technology becomes activated by exiting the vehicle and having the key fob on your person within five feet. Once you step beyond the five feet range, the doors and tailgate will lock while the exterior lights flash and the beeper sounds.
Hopefully, this gives you a better idea of just how the Smart Entry system and its auto-lock technology work. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to give us a call!

MY PASSPORT 2021 HAD KEYFOB IN CAR AND MY WIFE CLOSED WALKED OUT OF CAR FOR A FEW MINUTES. WHEN SHE RETURNED DOORS HAD LOCKED WITH KKEY INSIDE. WHY? I THOUGHT THAT CAR COULD NOT AUTOMATICALLY LOCK WHEN KEY FOB IS IN CAR…MICHAEL
Michael, It is my understanding as well as the General Manager that this cannot happen. If the key is inside the vehicle it would not auto lock. If this indeed did happen with your vehicle please being it by and let us have a look at the Passport to ensure it is not part of a bigger issue.
Thanks,

My walk away auto lock stopped working on my 2016 pilot awd touring. I get the first beep when I close the door (tested with each door individually) but when I walk away, no second beep or auto lock. I didn’t leave the spare key fob in the car. Both fobs have fresh batteries and both have the issue with no auto lock. I also just replaced the start stop push button with the newer 35881-TG7-A03 model because I had a separate keyless start error, but replacing the button didn’t fix the auto lock. What components are involved in the auto lock besides the key fob that I can troubleshoot? Seems like all the door switches are working. Any suggestions?
